A sufficiently destructive explosion could temporarily displace air through complete combustion of the atmosphere or concussion from a powerful shockwave, which would also be more than powerful enough to knock down trees in the vicinity. The trees falling in this temporary vacuum would not make a sound. Of course the trees might just be vaporized, incinerated, or blown to bits.

Anyway, yes, they make a sound.

you not being there has nothing to do with it - for example, what if you left an audio recorder in the vicinity, then picked it up and listened to it the next day?

Sound is the name we give to the effect when the vibrations of the molecules in the air are interpreted by our ears (or, yes i suppose, the vibrations are picked up by some recording device). So, sound is socially constructed.

Does it make a SOUND? No
Does the air vibrate? Yes

Something is real if it is real in its consequences.
A sound has no consequence if noone hears it. The sound, therefore, is not real.

What if there's a small animal nearby and IT will hear the sound?

I think that's the problem - the tree makes a sound, but there's nobody to hear it. But that doesn't mean the sound is void.

Well... if theres anything there to hear it, then it makes a sound, obviously. But for the purposes of the proposition, there is literally nothing with the capacity to hear within range to hear it.
